Boomi Update! March 19th

Hey everyone! I’ve been having a blast lately. If I’m not at work or playing with puppies, I’m hanging out with new friends or with the other girls who work here, getting our car stuck (lol!), having after work drinks with my boss, or walking around town and exploring.

I really do like my job. I was told by all the other girls our boss can be mean, and sure she made one girl cry on my second day, but I don’t really see her as a mean person. When you have a business to run and things need to be done a certain way I think all her behaviour is justified. Maybe it’s just because I haven’t personally been yelled at yet but I also do my job properly so I’m not sure that’ll even happen.

Making friends around here is easy. You see the same people all the time and the pub is the central hub of the town, and that’s where I always am. I generally like all of my coworkers except for Olga. I still like her as a person, I just don’t like her work ethic so being on the same shift as her frustrates me sometimes. She’s leaving soon so it won’t be an issue anymore.

Last week we had a going away party for the girl I replaced here at the pub and I told my boss how annoying she is at times. This week she basically got fired and was told to pack her bags by the end of this week. I don’t really think it has anything to do with me because she really isn’t that good of an employee, but I found the coincidence of the timing funny.

Across the street from the pub is a kids playground and there’s this one kangaroo with a bent ear who lives there. I go see him almost every day, and I’m hoping if I keep going he’ll eventually let me get closer. I noticed today I was a little bit closer before he hopped away, so we’re making progress! roo tracks

He brought a friend with him one day

My backyard has a beautiful hibiscus bush that has started flowering, and we often get gorgeous sunsets that our yard has a great view of! I love being outside in the evening to see the pretty colours in the sky

The pub is technically open until midnight, but we close every day when there’s no people left. On Saturday night we were done quite early so we drove to the next town over to go for some drinks. While we were driving it finally rained for the first time since I’ve been in Australia! This is good news for all the farmers but while you’re driving a very small car, it’s not great. The rain makes it harder to see all the kangaroos on the road and our car is way too small to hit one in. By the time we got to Goondiwindi there were knee high puddles in the street and everyone was very excited it was finally raining.

We slept in town, as we were all drinking, and left early in the morning to go back to Boomi. We made it about twenty minutes out of town before getting to a big stretch of road that was washed out.

I’d like to point out now that I was not the one driving. I’ve never been accused of being the worlds best driver but this was actually not my fault! Allie figured out little car could make it through the water, and it might have, but the problem was it was so washed out we couldn’t tell where the road even was anymore. Because of this and how flat the landscape is here, we were actually driving in the ditch and getting stuck in the mud was what really got us stranded.

Allie was freaking right out but I was laughing and taking photos because in the middle of a record breaking drought we found the only wet road south of the Queensland border and bogged (Aussie slang for stuck in water) the smallest, shittiest old car possible on it.

I suggested we sit on the roof and wait for our boss but Allie literally phoned the police to tell them we were stranded, which got us basically no where. He drove us back to Goondiwindi, the opposite direction we wanted to go. When our boss came he then had to drive all the way to town instead of just to where the car was. He had some choice words for her along the lines of, “of course the only American girl would be this dumb”, and I was thankful I wasn’t driving because I’m sure there’s a good chance I would have gotten stuck there too.

Then our boss, Rick, tried to tow the car out. Allie got in the car to steer it out, but she didn’t steer it at all. When he started driving she damn near went out of one ditch and into the other. He got out and I could just hear him scream “you have to steer the fuckin cunt Allie!” and I just giggled in the backseat because I’ve heard very similar words from my dad while he pulled my civic out of the ditch back in the day. This really did not help her case against being labelled as the dumb American one either.

When we finally made it home our car getting stuck was the talk of the town, because no local would have done that. But I did get some pretty pictures from that little adventure!

And of course our car drying out the next day

  1. Good Morning! Well it’s Been interesting reading your blog! I would like you to include ‘what the best part of your day was’ in a few of them if you wouldn’t mind? I laughed when I heard you in one sentence with ‘back in the day’ + the pic of you hanging your clothes on the clothesline!
Heard that You might get eaten by cockroaches but unfortunately it’s just toenails and eyelids that they eat so when you return home you might just look a little funny but will love you regardless!!
Currently you have both your grandparents in the Fairview Hospital; Dad still taking up residence and Ma went in last night by ambulance-nothing serious. She has fallen a couple times and just getting checked over; will update you when & if anything is serious!
